Skoto Gallery is pleased to present Contrasts, a selection of New Sculptures and Drawings by the American-born artist Katherine Taylor. This is the second solo exhibition by the artist at the gallery. The reception is on Thursday, September 8th, 6-8 pm.

In Contrasts, Taylor continues her explorations of textures and patterns found in nature as the jumping off point for her creative process. A mold of a gum tree made in Tasmania becomes the feathers of ‘Bird’; bark bored by beetles are the sleek coat of ?Cat?; and a tree knot found in Sweden can be attributed to ?Lagarto?s’ foreboding glare.

These seemingly abstract connections are made while at play in the studio. Taylor experiments with rough versus polished, industrial versus natural, without having a clear visual intention. This organic process is not about misleading the viewer as it pays homage to nature that invites us to think about our relationship to the outside world. There is an inherent lure that draws the viewer into expecting one thing and discovering something new, or perhaps strange, in what may otherwise be overlooked.

Katherine Taylor was born 1974. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Dartmouth College in 1997 and a Master of Fine Arts degree from University of Melbourne in Australia in 2005 She has over the years consistently remained true to an artistic vision that is firmly rooted in the fissure between the natural world and the world of imagination. She divides her time between Houston, New York, and Eibar in Northern Spain. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally. She is in several public and private collections in the US and abroad.
